Dry Eye Treatment in Katy, TX

Eye Vantage diagnoses and treats dry eye disease at our office on FM 529 in Katy. If your eyes burn, feel gritty, water a lot or get blurry by afternoon, Dr. Sarah Hung, OD, finds the cause and builds a treatment plan. Eye drops alone rarely fix it.

Common dry eye symptoms

  • Burning, stinging or a gritty, sandy feeling

  • Watery eyes (the eye overproduces poor-quality tears)

  • Blurry vision that clears when you blink

  • Red or tired eyes after screens or reading

  • Contact lenses that feel uncomfortable by the end of the day

What causes dry eye

The most common cause is clogged oil glands in the eyelids (meibomian gland dysfunction), which lets tears evaporate too fast. Other causes include screen use, aging, hormone changes, some medications, contact lens wear, and Katy's mix of heat, wind and air conditioning. Itchy eyes may be eye allergies instead.

Your dry eye evaluation

We review your symptoms and medications, then examine your eyelids, oil glands and tear film. These results show whether your dry eye comes from low tear production, fast evaporation or inflammation, which decides the right treatment.

Treatments we offer

  • Home care plan: warm compresses, lid hygiene, the right artificial tears, and screen-break habits

  • Prescription eye drops that calm inflammation and help your eyes make more of their own tears, including short courses of steroid drops when needed

  • Punctal plugs: tiny plugs placed in the tear ducts during a quick in-office visit, so natural tears stay on the eye longer

  • LACRIFILL canalicular gel: an FDA-cleared hyaluronic acid gel placed in the tear drainage canals during a quick in-office visit, so natural tears stay on the eye longer

  • Treatment for eyelid inflammation (blepharitis), including prescription medication when needed

  • Contact lens changes: switching to lenses designed for dry eyes, or scleral lenses for severe cases

  • In-office lid exfoliation: a quick cleaning of the eyelid edges that clears debris and helps blocked oil glands

Insurance

Dry eye is a medical condition, so visits are often billed to medical insurance rather than vision insurance. We accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare and Medicare, and we verify coverage before your visit. See all insurance plans we accept.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my eyes watery if I have dry eye?

When tears evaporate too quickly, the eye floods itself with watery reflex tears. These tears lack oil, so they don't protect the eye, and the dryness continues.

Are over-the-counter eye drops enough?

They help mild cases. If you use drops more than a few times a day and still have symptoms, an exam can find the cause and better treatment.

Does insurance cover dry eye treatment?

Often, yes. Dry eye visits are usually billed to medical insurance. Coverage for specific in-office procedures varies, and we tell you any costs up front.

Can screen time cause dry eyes?

Yes. People blink up to half as often while looking at screens, which dries the eye. Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Can I wear contacts if I have dry eyes?

Often, yes. Treating the dry eye and switching lens materials helps many people wear contacts comfortably again.

How long does dry eye treatment take to work?

Many patients feel better within a few weeks. Chronic dry eye usually needs ongoing care, and we adjust the plan at follow-up visits.
