If you've been told you can't wear contacts, or glasses don't give you clear vision, scleral lenses may help. Dr. Sarah Hung, OD, fits scleral and other specialty contact lenses at Eye Vantage on FM 529 in Katy. We welcome patients from Katy, Cypress and west Houston.

What are scleral lenses?

Scleral lenses are large, rigid contact lenses that rest on the white of the eye (the sclera) and vault over the cornea. The space underneath holds a layer of saline that keeps the cornea moist. The smooth lens surface gives much clearer vision for corneas with an irregular shape.

Who scleral lenses help

  • Keratoconus, where the cornea thins and bulges into a cone

  • Irregular corneas after a corneal transplant, LASIK, RK or an injury

  • Severe dry eye and other ocular surface diseases

  • High astigmatism that soft lenses can't correct well

  • People who can't wear regular contacts comfortably

Other specialty lenses we fit

  • Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses

  • Toric lenses for astigmatism and multifocal lenses for presbyopia

  • MiSight 1 day lenses for kids' myopia control

  • Hybrid lenses, with a rigid center and a soft outer skirt

What a scleral lens fitting involves

  1. Evaluation. A full eye exam plus OCT imaging of the front of your eye to plan the lens fit.

  2. Trial lenses. We try diagnostic lenses and check how they sit on your eye.

  3. Custom lenses. Your lenses are made to your measurements.

  4. Training. We teach you how to fill, insert and remove the lenses.

  5. Follow-up visits to fine-tune the fit and comfort.

The number of fitting visits varies from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Are scleral lenses comfortable?

Most people find them more comfortable than smaller rigid lenses. They rest on the less sensitive white of the eye and never touch the cornea.

Can scleral lenses help keratoconus?

Yes. They're one of the most effective ways to restore clear vision with keratoconus, and some patients can delay or avoid corneal surgery.

Can I wear scleral lenses with dry eye?

Yes. The saline reservoir keeps the cornea covered and moist all day, which is why sclerals are often used for severe dry eye.

Does insurance cover scleral lenses?

Often, when they're medically necessary. Coverage varies by plan, and we verify it before ordering.

How long do scleral lenses last?

With good care, typically about one to two years.
