If you have diabetes, a yearly diabetic eye exam is one of the best ways to protect your sight. Dr. Sarah Hung, OD, checks for diabetic retinopathy and other diabetes-related eye changes at our office on FM 529 in Katy. We use Optomap retinal imaging and OCT scans to find problems before they affect your vision.

Why diabetic eye exams matter

High blood sugar can damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye. Early diabetic retinopathy has no symptoms. You can see 20/20 while blood vessels are leaking. Finding it early gives you and your doctors time to act before vision is lost.

What we check

  • Diabetic retinopathy: leaking or bleeding blood vessels and new, fragile vessels

  • Diabetic macular edema: swelling in the center of the retina, measured with OCT

  • Glaucoma and cataracts, which are more common in people with diabetes

  • Vision changes that come with blood sugar swings

Our technology

  • Optomap captures a wide view of the retina, often without dilation drops. Optomap has an additional fee.

  • OCT maps the layers of the retina to find swelling that can't be seen in a regular exam.

  • Dilation is still used when Dr. Hung needs a closer look.

How often to come in

Most people with diabetes need a diabetic eye exam at least once a year. Dr. Hung may recommend visits more often if she finds retinopathy, or during pregnancy for women with diabetes.

Working with your doctors

After your exam, we send a report to your primary care doctor or endocrinologist. This helps your whole care team track how diabetes is affecting your body.

Insurance

Diabetic eye exams are usually billed to medical insurance, not vision insurance. Medicare Part B covers one diabetic eye exam a year. We also accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Texas Medicaid, Molina Healthcare and Texas CHIP. See all insurance plans we accept.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have a diabetic eye exam?

At least once a year, or more often if Dr. Hung finds changes in your retina.

Does Medicare cover diabetic eye exams?

Yes. Medicare Part B covers a diabetic eye exam once a year. You typically pay 20% after your deductible.

Is a diabetic eye exam different from a regular eye exam?

Yes. It focuses on the retina and is billed to medical insurance. If you also need glasses, we can do both at the same visit.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Sometimes. Optomap often lets us see the retina without drops, but dilation gives the most complete view when needed.

I see fine. Do I still need an exam?

Yes. Diabetic retinopathy usually causes no symptoms until it's advanced.
