Our Eye Care Technology

Eye Vantage uses advanced imaging and testing so Dr. Sarah Hung, OD, can find eye disease early, often before you notice any symptoms. Here's what we use at our office on FM 529 in Katy, and what it means for you.

Optomap ultra-widefield retinal imaging

Optomap captures a 200-degree view of your retina in a single image. A traditional exam sees a much smaller area at a time. Optomap helps us spot retinal tears, diabetic retinopathy and other changes in the far edges of the retina, often without dilation drops. We save each image, so we can compare changes over time. Optomap imaging has an additional fee.

Used in: comprehensive eye exams and diabetic eye exams

Zeiss Cirrus OCT (optical coherence tomography)

OCT uses light to create a cross-section of the retina and optic nerve, a bit like an ultrasound. It shows the layers beneath the surface, so we can detect early glaucoma damage, diabetic swelling and macular degeneration years before vision changes. We also use it to image the front of the eye when fitting scleral lenses.

Used in: glaucoma testing, diabetic eye exams, comprehensive eye exams and scleral lens fittings

Carrot virtual reality visual field test

A visual field test maps your side vision to find blind spots you may not notice, a key test for glaucoma and some neurological conditions. Our Carrot system runs the test in a lightweight virtual reality headset instead of a large bowl-shaped machine.

iCare tonometer

The iCare tonometer measures eye pressure with a tiny, light probe that touches the eye for a split second. There's no air puff and usually no numbing drops, so it's comfortable for kids and adults.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to be dilated if I have Optomap?

Often not. Optomap lets Dr. Hung see most of the retina without drops. She may still recommend dilation for certain conditions or symptoms.

Is OCT safe?

Yes. OCT uses light, not radiation, and nothing touches your eye.

Is there an extra cost for imaging?

Optomap imaging has an additional fee. OCT and visual fields are usually billed to medical insurance when there's a medical reason. See insurance plans we accept.
