Am I a Candidate for LASIK?
Eye Vantage helps Katy patients find out whether LASIK or another vision correction surgery is right for them. Dr. Sarah Hung, OD, checks your eyes, explains your options, refers you to a trusted surgeon at Whitsett Vision or Eye Center of Texas, and handles your follow-up care at our office on FM 529.
You may be a good candidate if you:
Are 18 or older
Have had a stable prescription for at least a year
Have healthy corneas that are thick enough for the procedure
Don't have uncontrolled dry eye, keratoconus or certain eye diseases
Aren't pregnant or nursing
What we check at your candidacy exam
We measure your prescription, pupil size and tear film, and check the health of your corneas. Dry eye is one of the most common reasons to delay LASIK, so we treat it first if needed. If you wear contacts, we'll tell you how long to leave them out before the exam.
If LASIK isn't right for you
Other options may be, including PRK, SMILE and implantable lenses (ICL). For patients over 50, a lens replacement, similar to cataract surgery, may make more sense. We'll explain which options fit your eyes.
Care before and after surgery
After surgery, you'll see us for follow-up visits to check healing and vision, close to home.
Cost and payment
Insurance usually doesn't cover LASIK, but some vision plans, including VSP and EyeMed, offer LASIK discounts. You can use FSA or HSA funds, and CareCredit offers payment plans (see payment options). Call us for the cost of the candidacy exam.

How much does LASIK cost in the Houston area?

Can I get LASIK if I have astigmatism?
Often, yes. LASIK can correct most levels of astigmatism. Your candidacy exam will confirm.
Can I get LASIK if I have dry eyes?
Possibly, once the dry eye is treated. LASIK can temporarily make dry eye worse, so we get your eyes healthy first.
Will I still need reading glasses after LASIK?
LASIK doesn't prevent the age-related need for reading glasses after about 40. Ask about monovision if this concerns you.
